Augmentative &
Alternative Communication
(AAC)
Communication is a human right. At STAR, we are committed to helping each child find their "voice".

Some children may communicate through natural speech. Some children with severe speech/language impairments may need additional support to communicate. Specifically, they may benefit from enhancing or substituting natural speech to help them participate fully in daily life.

AAC does just that. Some children find their voice through a communication notebook or picture symbol boards. Other children find their voice through a high-tech speech-generating device. Other children find their voice through a combination of systems and strategies.

AAC comes in many forms, both electronic and non-electronic, depending on the child's unique capabilities and needs.

At STAR, we offer comprehensive AAC assessments to help find the system and strategies that will most functionally augment your child's communication skills.

No matter the form of communication, AAC helps to ensure every child has the right:

-
To express feelings
-
To be offered choices
-
To say no/reject
-
To request
-
To gain attention
-
To ask questions
-
To answer questions
-
To be listened to
-
To be included in social interactions
-
To be a full and equal member of their community

Every child deserves a "voice".
